At the sound of a woman's voice in her bedroom, D.J. sat up so fast her head spun from the speed. |

"A young, attractive girl like you. I would think you'd have plenty of friends, male and female, to spend your time with. You don't need to mope around this dreary excuse for a home the entire day. Get out and do something, and then you won't keep thinking about that poor boy you had to shoot. You and I both know you had no choice." |

D.J.'s gaze darted around the room, searching for the source of the female voice. |

With great caution she reached for her shoulder holster, where she'd tucked her newly issued sidearm, her usual weapon having been taken for evidence by the first officers on the scene the night before. |

A giggle sounded, directly above D.J.'s bed. She jerked her head backward, then winced at the pain shooting through her neck at the abrupt movement. |
